A day late! Sorry about that. Was pretending I was three people all week, trying to get a lot done in a little time.
Today I’d like to share this pic with you. It was taken in 2015 in London on the Victoria Embankment. This picture is similar to so many that I have from London that combines the old with the new and is one of the reasons why I love traveling there so much..
This bronze sphinx (one of two) is set at the base of Cleopatra’s Needle, an obelisk created in 1450 BC and gifted to London by the ruler of Egypt in 1819. It was “winched into position” in 1878 after a very long and expensive journey. There are still chips and chunks missing from when the area was bombed in 1917 during World War I, left to commemorate the event.
In the background, and across the Thames on the South Bank, is the London Eye, an enormous “observation wheel” with enclosed passenger capsules that hold up to 25 people. It was opened to the public in March of 2000, and I got to take a spin back in 2009. It took a while to get me to actually look outside (I’m afraid of heights) but when I did I began snapping pictures of everything because the views of London are absolutely gorgeous.
If you’d like to learn more about Cleopatra’s Needle you can read about it HERE.
If you ever have the opportunity to visit London and want a cool view of the city, you can read up on the London Eye HERE.
Love the combination of old and new in this ancient but so modern city.
