February Challenge – Update

Two weeks down, two weeks to go.

The challenge to write everyday is going well. I skipped a day but made it up with a longer writing session the next day, so I’m pretending that it didn’t happen.

My original intention to write earlier has not panned out, and when I do have time in the morning I end up journaling instead. It takes seconds to boot up the laptop, it takes seconds to get out the journal and get writing, but journaling wins out. Maybe because I have locked in that habit already and not journaling in the morning feels weird. And it really does help mentally to organize the day when I journal, so I don’t want to give that up.

I have been writing between 125–150 words everyday (evenings) and, while I figured I’d write bits and pieces of different ideas, I ended up going with one idea and following it through. The words come easily, which feels great, but when I don’t get to write until late I’m exhausted and writing feels like a chore. Makes me feel guilty for not enjoying myself when I’m writing each and every time, but that’s just me being tired. I get it done, and I’m just very glad of that.

I have set my alarm for 5am on workdays (beginning today) and will write for 15-30 minutes before breakfast. (I love waking up early enough to enjoy breakfast and coffee before work. I used to eat at my desk at my last job because I’d sleep in until last minute, running around to get ready for work. A hurried morning made for a cranky commute most days.)

Just a little extra time will give me the time to write and keep my nice morning routine, so I just need to make it happen. Easier said than done? Maybe. We shall see…

Reading update: Finished Sword of Destiny. Absolutely loving the Witcher series so far! I have Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and the next Witcher book Blood of Elves, as well as Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation on the coffee table. And, since I have always wanted to write a good mystery story, I picked up Writing & Selling Your Mystery Novel by Hallie Ephron. I also have A Most Curious Murder by Elizabeth Kane Buzzelli to read along with the mystery how-to book.

Seems ambitious but I don’t have a deadline for finishing them all, though finishing a book each month feels pretty awesome.

Here’s to the next two weeks! 5am, here I come!
